The Challenge
Universal Sweepstakes has been “all-in” on AWS for years, but as the company rapidly scaled its infrastructure, it needed to make sure costs didn’t rapidly scale as well. Traditional approaches to cost management that rely on manual, reactive processes had become untenable as the company’s now modernized infrastructure dynamically scales up and down in response to changing demands. Universal Sweepstakes needed a cost management solution that was as dynamic and proactive as its infrastructure.
The Solution
Universal Sweepstakes joined Shire Cloud Managed Billing services and gained access to Shire Cloud powerful cost management portal. In the portal, Universal Sweepstakes was able to review its historical AWS performance and see recommendations for purchasing Reserved Instances (R1s), removing unused resources and rightsizing its instances. Working with one of Shire Cloud dedicated billing experts, Universal Sweepstakes was able to optimize the account and reduce its monthly AWS hosting fees by over 30%.
Furthermore, Shire Cloud was also able to identify advanced recommendations for cost savings such as migrating Universal Sweepstakes database to Aurora, saving 40% while also increasing database performance by 5x.

The Shire Cloud Managed Billing portal analyzed Universal Sweepstakes Detailed Billing Record (DBR) and laid out the various RI purchase options and its associated return on investment (ROI).

WorkSpaces is extremely easy to manage. Working with Shire Cloud, Universal Sweepstakes can maintain just a few “Golden Images” that contain the necessary applications for each work role. Furthermore, the WorkSpaces clients and Chromebooks automatically update, and Zero Clients have no operating system to patch or update whatsoever.
